Puerto Viejo Holidays

The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week.

Semana Santa (Holy Week or Easter Week) , is one of the most revered and popular religious holidays in Costa Rica. It is a time of both religious observation and processions and a time of festivities and parties. Religious celebrations are held at churches and in the home, and many local flock to the beaches to enjoy a break from work, fun family time on the beach, and a sizzling barbecue.

Dramatic reenactments of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ take place, including a pilgimage to the Basilica de los Angeles in Cartago city in honor of the Virgin of the Angels. Many take this pilgrimage in order to “pay” for an answer to a prayer which the Virgin has answered and to renew their faith. Most regular business activity and public services crawl to a halt from Thursday to Monday, so it’s a good idea to stock up supplies (including alcohol if you partake) ahead of time. Hotels and tour reservations are usually booked solid, so if you plan on joining in on Costa Rica’s Semana Santa celebrations, be sure to make reservations well in advance!
